A 1+2 Approach

By 2021, every school in Scotland will offer children the opportunity to learn a first additional language from primary one, and a second additional language by primary five.

Materials from pilot schools

Following on from recommendations made in 'Language learning in Scotland: A 1+2 approach', the first of the primary pilots began in November 2012. Materials used by four of the pilot primary schools during their projects are available for download and can be used and adapted as necessary.

  • French
  • Spanish

At Tough Primary in Aberdeenshire, French was taught as the first additional language (L2) throughout the school.

At Hillside Primary, in Dundee and Langlands Primary in Angus, French was also taught as the first additional language (L2) from P1-P7.

Support was provided by consultants in the form of CLPL for staff, suggested lesson plans, sound files and classroom resources.

(sound files will play when in Slide Show mode)
