Venue: Edinburgh
Visit website

Event Date: 25/11/2017 12:00 - 16:00

Professor Bernie O'Rourke of Heriot-Watt University will give a talk on 'Who has the authority to speak? - Linguistic intolerance, anonymity and monolingual regimes.'

In the current social and political climate we are seeing an even greater return to monolingual regimes leading to linguistic intolerance at many levels. In this talk Professor O'Rourke will examine the ideologies behind such intolerance and why certain profiles of speakers (new speakers, native speakers) and users of particular languages (majority or minority languages) are given more authority than others.

The talk is free, but booking is essential. Lunch is available prior to the talk, however individuals who choose to attend the lunch will be required to pay for this.
